New Publication Highlights the Contribution of Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Healthcare in Achieving The Goals of The Astana Declaration and Universal Health Coverage

3 April 2023

The TCIH Coalition is pleased to announce the release of the article “The Role of Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Healthcare in Achieving the Goals of the Astana Declaration and Universal Health Coverage: The Development of the Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Healthcare Declaration”, in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine. The publication, authored by representatives of the TCIH Declaration, highlights the potential of Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Health (TCIH) in achieving the goals of the Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care and Universal Health Coverage.

The 2018 Astana Declaration calls for wider inclusion of TCIH into health systems. The authors of the article discuss how to appropriately involve TCIH in health systems to fulfil its potential.

The TCIH model can help in the transformation from disease-oriented towards person- and community-oriented healthcare, respond to individual and cultural preferences, and contribute to addressing health challenges like Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). However, fully harnessing the potential of TCIH requires accreditation of TCIH practitioners, increased research funding and data collection, and adequate ways to register TCIH medicines.

The authors also call for TCIH stakeholders to be allowed to participate in policymaking and consultation processes and contribute relevant expertise, resources, and knowledge from the field to shape future healthcare policy.
